1. You need a new battery
2. You need a new power cord.
See if you can find someone that has a power cord that will fit your laptop. If it charges it then you know your cord is bad, if it does not charge it, you need a new battery. If'n you have to order either one, I use www.tigerdirect.com a lot and they have never let me down!
Open Question: Everytime I put in a game in my computer, it doesn't read the disk. Solution?
Click Start and type Device Manager in the search field then press Enter
See if there are any yellow exclamation points next to a driver in the list within the Device Manager
If there is, right-click on the driver name and choose "update driver software"
Without your computer name and model I can't direct you to a link to download the specific driver for your cd drive.

Open Question: Reliable brand of laptop?
The only way to buy a reliable laptop - is to buy a used one - that has been around for at least 2 years so that you can see the proven reports and failure rates from various sites... (heck just go to Ebay and search for Dell 1330 -- you will see that every last one for sale says 'as is graphics card dead' -- and obviously you will know that dell made a big OOPS on designing that model...) -- or you can look up a 10 year old Dell c600 - and see a ton of them for sale for 40 bucks total... perfectly working... (just old as dirt and slow as heck- not to mention outdated) So Dell is a perfect example of a company that has made GREAT - long lasting products - and also a few OOPS models...
EVERY company has OOPS models... (should I repeat that?) -- EVERY company has a model that is a lemon... and nobody knows it is going to be a lemon until about a year after its been selling... because thats when they will start failing...
The ONLY way to be safe when buying a new laptop - is to buy the extended warranty - AND to make weekly backups of your entire hard drive... so if the pc fails - you are not out money... just time.
Now I can list a few models that are reliable - only because I know their design flaws... as I work on a lot of them
And I can list a few that are lemons... but that will not really help you - unless you have specific models you are interested in...
HP dv8000's hold up pretty well - some are single core models - some are core2duo -- some have a problem on the charging circuit for the battery - they have about a 5% failure rate on the first year - a 10% failure rate on the 2nd year - 15% by the 3rd year - unsure beyond that
HP dv9000's have a faulty design on their nvidia graphics chips - only buy one of those if its intel or ATI graphics...
HP dv6000's are a solid little machine - though rather weak...
Toshiba Satelite x205's are holding up pretty well - the SLi models with 2 graphics cards are still very viable now - as long as you get a higher end core2duo (they made them with many many processors... some crap - some great...) I can play crysis2 on my x205 sli1 on medium settings and I get about 30fps -- the laptop is 5 years old now... I'd call that reliable...
Dell xps m1210's are a mixed bag... the intel graphics cards tend to last longer - some of the nvidia 7900 cards have overheated (they are soldiered onto the mobo so thats a bad thing... replacing the whole mobo is required) but that laptop is now... 4 or 5 years old... so they would be reliable I'd think.
Some of the latest laptops - selling for $250 to $350 new - look the same even though they are branded acer/emachine/toshiba/etc... you can tell them because they all have the same flat - generic keyboard and 15.6 inch screen... they are fairly reliable - but have only been in production for 2 years now... they are bottom of the barrel kind of machines - not for gaming...
you really need to say WHAT kind of laptop you need... because - unfortunately - -there is NO RELIABLE BRAND.
I can say - that asus laptops tend to be designed with more thought than some of the others... I rarely see them getting repaired - or being sold for parts... but I have no personal experience owning them and have not looked up any official failure rate information.
Every company keeps track of its models failure rates - with percentages over years on a chart... Getting a copy of those charts takes an act of god... it would be interesting to see them posted more publicly.
Open Question: Would you recommend getting the 3g version of a tablet? Or is the wifi version enough?
I know it depends a lot on who you ask and how they use it, but I'm unsure of where I'll be in a year (either travelling, working, or in grad school), so I'm not even sure how *I* will be using it. I'm just trying to see what others think.
So, where do you live and what do you do on your tablet? If you have 3g, is it worth it for you? Do you not have it and wish you did?

Open Question: Why are 3 hard drives 3 different prices ?
Often a hard drive will stop working - and (at least on desktop models) you can replace the control board and they will begin working again... -- laptop models can not easily swap boards like that.
Likely what you are seeing is that Microcenter bought 1000 of the first hard drive at X price and listed them for sale at their flat markup price
Then they bought 500 of the second hard drive at Y price - and listed them at their flat markup price (and they must have paid a different price for these identical drives... so they are charging you a different price for them)
- They must not have a good inventory tracking comparing system.
Those are fair prices - and good warranty terms... Other places to get hard drives would be listed on www.pricewatch.com I've been able to get 640gb drives for that price...
The only reason a hard drive would cost more - or less - would be because of:
1: Brand name
2: Warranty
3: RPM's
4: cache
5: height (some are taller and will not fit into a standard laptop)

Open Question: Don't understand why My laptop turns on automatically?
If your already do so, then their are some computers that can startup from being shut down, but it is very odd that it would do so if you didn't configure it. It is an advanced feature usually. You can read the source for more info.
Lastly, it is possible your power button is stuck somehow. It may be turning on when something bumps it a little because it is stuck down. Clean around it a bit and make sure it is moving up and down like it should.
Best of luck!

Open Question: What's so special about Apple Laptops?
Disclaimer - Talking hardware and software - I hate apple in every way shape and form; I can appreciate their design and understand that it is great for some people. I love the PC design - I do not like Microsoft... Not a big fan of Linux either... but I tend to use Microsoft products on my PC due to the huge compatibility that I can achieve. Each have their place in the world...
PRIMARY REASON THAT APPLE IS 'SPECIAL'
Primarily - the reason that Apple appeals to people is because 'it looks cool' and is 'easy to use' - it is designed with an 'out of the box experience' - so when you buy your Apple and go home - you plug it in and it WORKS... no need to remove bloatware - no need to install media players or other odd things... You have a fully working ready to go machine out of the box. Any newly purchased Windows 7 pc may look like its ready to go-- but you will still have to install your messenger, your web browsers & addons, antivirus, media players, adobe/flash addons - you will have to spend at least a few hours downloading and installing other software - some of which you will have to purchase - just to equal what apple gives free. (though with the open source projects becoming more popular - this problem is less about money and more about time to install everything)
SECONDARY reason is that Apple has always marketed itself as a graphics based system - for those who are doing multimedia... Apple got color monitors long before PC did - Apple got the mouse standardized before the pc (though their standard mouse sucks and has never improved) Apple tries to sell itself to Graphic artists - those people appreciate the 'pretty white designs' and the 'pretty graphical interface' - all the 'icons' that now populate the iphones / ipads / etc... PC systems were more focused on TEXT based menu systems - structured - rigid type menus and designs that were more angular... Apple has always been more 'bubbly and rounded' in design.
HARDWARE DIFFERENCES:
In the beginning Apple offered all in one systems that were very appealing to people - before laptops were common... having a screen with your floppy on the bottom was awesome... all the schools and businesses started buying them up... -- no you could not expand on them like their PC counterparts (back in windows 3.1 time)
Now Apple tends to use printed circuit boards and very small components - which allows them to make skinny products. They do not have surface mounted items hand placed - they have tiny compact components -- good for the person who wants light weigh -- bad for the person who wants to fix one that has been broken (PC style systems tend to have multiple components attached to the motherboard so that you can remove and replace things using connectors) Apples have never been designed to upgrade or expand (yes you CAN upgrade them - to a limited effect - but you can not customize them to the same extent that you can customize a PC - not as easily as going to best buy and buying the latest graphics card/ sound card / whatever...)
It is important to note that though apple has 'dedicated graphics Chips' - they are not as good as a PC laptop with a 'dedicated graphics CARD' - meaning that apple has a cracker sized chip soldiered onto the mobo -- where a pc *MAY have a full graham cracker sized card full of chips / memory/capacitors/etc that is attached on top of its motherboard- removable, upgradable - replaceable... Most pc laptops have integrated chips - or dedicated chips - I'm referring to the elite models that have full graphics CARDS...
Graphics Card > Graphics Chip

Open Question: Who makes a better Laptop, HP,or Dell.. Because i'm looking for a good used one, Full size/ or Mini.?
Between HP and Dell, it really just depends on the specs of the computer. If it were between two with the same specs, I would personally choose Dell, but HP is a fine computer as well. It also depends for which purposes you will be using the computer. Just distinguish which one has better hardware for the price you are getting. Also, if you're getting a used one, check which software they already have installed on it, which may tip the favor of your getting it and not having to spend another few hundred on software. I'm assuming for $300, you should want around a 2GHz processor, graphics card I don't think is significant for your purposes if you aren't gaming on it, 1 or 2 GB of RAM, and however much storage you want on the hard drive.

Open Question: How do you nuke your computer completely of viruses?
First download the latest versions of the following (if the virus is blocking your internet, you may have to download these on another machine and burn to CD or copy to a USB memory stick)
Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
ComboFix http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUB…
Download these to your desktop and before running them, change their names
Malwarebytes: mblah.scr
ComboFix: comfix.exe
Superantispyware: http://www.superantispyware.com/superant…
CCleaner (cleans out caches) http://www.ccleaner.com
Avast! 4 Home: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-…
Now, start the machine in Safe Mode (hit the F8 function key as the machine boots up, and choose Safe mode)
Turn off System Restore on your machine, but only until you get this fixed - many of these trojans get copied into the System Restore files, which anti-virus programs aren't allowed to touch and the viruses could reinstall themselves from there. My Computer > Properties > System Restore.
Then run CCleaner (it'll make scanning faster because it will delete a bunch of temp files and save you from having to scan those.) If the virus blocks CCleaner from running, proceed to the next step.
Then run Malwarebytes (mblah), and clean everything it says.
Then run ComboFix (comfix), and clean everything it says. If it tells you to reboot your machine during the process, do so immediately.
Then install and run Avast - tell Avast to do a boot-scan - click on "schedule boot-scan" - and restart the computer
Let it start and do the Avast boot scan
Then turn System Restore back on.
Now install the antivirus program of your choice to do continuous scanning, and make sure you keep it up to date. Install SuperAntiSypware.
Always keep your Windows, web browser and Java software up to date - frequent patches are released to plug security holes.

I have unplugged everything but the cpu fan, tried a different power supply, tried headphones instead of my speakers, use the front panel instead of the rear, went into the bios & turned off USB3.0, firewire, even turned onboard audio back on and off still the same after it was turned back on, uninstalled the drivers & used the cd ones, the windows update ones, the gigabyte website drivers & still nothing. I even switched the screws on the standoff & took washers off. Pushed the tabs out more on the I/O shield panel & STILL.........Right after the machine posts right after as the Windows 7 Logo is forming the sound from the speakers or headphones will make a static pop noise.
Everything on the machine works perfect......in WINDOWS everything sounds fine.........its just at the same time every time, no sooner no later that it makes the sound just past the black Post bios screen once it gets at the windows 7 logo just as its done loading the image of the Windows 7 Logo.
I even called Gigabyte long distance & there tech was useless cuz he did all the stuff that i did and basically said there is interference but couldn't say what.

Open Question: sony vaio laptop running high temps?
Make sure your laptop is on a flat surface(not on your lap) and nothing is covering the vents. If you laptop is on lap, your clothes can cover the vents on the bottom(vents are on side and bottom of laptop) too much and cause the heat to build up and not be able to escape.

Open Question: My computer keeps asking me to "format disk in drive F: before you can use it," when nothing is in drive F:?
A couple of thought: it could be a problem of Windows remembering some USB device that was once plugged in to the computer
If you use a virtual disc program like PowerISO or daemon tools you may have a virtual drive enabled that is being read improperly.

Open Question: What is the best case I could buy for $100 or less?
Mostly what you'd look for is good ventilation and fans. Other things can be nice too like tool-free expansion slots and drive bays, a cable management system (or get some zip-ties) and plenty of space inside.
NZXT, Apevia, Cooler Master, and of course Antec all make some decent cases. The NZXT Gamma is an example of a decent case for about $35. You'd want to add more fans to it and it's ugly as hell but it has plenty of places for air to get in and out.

I ve selected msi 880g-E45 motherboard. is this a good choice? can anyone suggest me a good motherboard, price within 5k. Thanks.Answer Question by Jak Member since:February 12, 2010Total points:1,088 (Level 3)msi 880g-E45 is a good board. If you are not going use more than one pci and e-sata then asus M4A88T-M is the second choice. Which is a micro ATX.
Open Question: What Macbook is preferable for Valve games?
My biggest preference is it to be able to play Valve games like Portal 2, with relative ease, and if not that the Orange Box at the least. I understand it's not a machine for gaming but I haven't had a PC that could play those games at all anyway.
I've been looking into the 15" Macbook Pro but if anyone can help me out that'd be awesome.

Open Question: Can you connect a 3d ready laptop to a 3d monitor and get 3d from the screen?
By the way i do have a 3d capeable graphics card, 2.3ghz core i7 with turbo boost 2.0 and 16gbs of ram.Answer Question by Eric H Member since:March 02, 2008Total points:520 (Level 2)No, if you did not preorder it with 3D, it will not work with a 3D monitor. THey probably did not upgrade the graphics card to support 3D, as you did not upgrade your screen. There are different variations of laptop cards for different prefferences(3D or not) However, if you receive it, you probably would be able to send it back and ask for them to upgrade it to 3D

Open Question: Western Digital My Passport 320GB micro usb failure. Need options.?
The thing that broke is the micro usb female slot. It doesn't seem broken to the naked eye but im sure it is broken iv cleaned it with alcohol and compressed air. I can get it to turn on when bending it around but thats no use because the male connect teeth don't lock in properly. It's bent out of shape, can't clean it because it's too small and metal is too tinty.
Too tinky to fix i guess. I hate micro usb now, why can't they just keep things sturdy and simple?
Now i guess i have to buy another adapter for the 12 pin thing and dremel a new hole in the case for it to fit?
I'f amazon.com has it al take it.

Open Question: Dell XPS or Macbook Pro?
MacBooks are the best. their fast. easy to use. have more compatibility. and you can use more programs for students.
If you'll be spending a lot of time on such matters, I'd probably go with the MAC. However, if you won't be spending a majority of the time doing such things, I'd look into the dell xps 16, but maybe spend a bit on beefing up the hardware.
However, when you are ready to be doing some serious stuff, you will be in a better position to know what you are looking for in a laptop.
In short, get a good value one and when it is time to get a more serious one you will know what you need and even why you need it.

Open Question: Computer not recognizing USB?
Be aware of this before doing anything physical to it ;)
The standard fix for this problem is to 'uninstall' the USB ports, then re-start the computer and let Windows re-install them. You have to go into the 'Device Manager' to uninstall them.
If that doesn`t work, contact Toshiba support for their suggestions.
They may ask you to do a 'factory restore' (just resets everything to the day you bought it).

If you mean to human eyes, that's not normal. Check the refresh rate setting of the monitor. If it's abnormally low, fix it. If it's not set oddly low, it's time to buy a new monitor.
