Open Question: Why won't my usb hard drive work with my laptop after being plugged into my Bluray player?

Now whenever I plug my hard drive into my laptop it comes up as a local disk and I can't access any of the files, or even view them. My laptop says I have to format the drive but I REALLY! don't want to do that as I would lose 700gb of personal files!
