When your computer's graphics is having an easy time and not having to work hard it uses the weak Intel graphics chip, but if you fire up a demanding 3D game then it'll switch to the more powerful AMD graphics chip. This is done to help reduce the power used by the laptop where possible, so that the battery lasts longer.
