Open Question: Do i have to call comcast to access the internet on my new laptop?

And I recently got a new laptop but I need an ISP username or adress and password and I wanted to know if I would have to call comcast for that? I'm 17 and I don't want a fee charged for trying to connect mine. I have a router and an ethernet cable which work fine on my xbox live. I plugged in the ethernet cable and it said it couldnt acess the internet. Why is this so? If I do call comcast, what do you think they will ask for? I can find the bills and give them account info if needed. What do you suggest I do other than calling?
