I am currently in college and I don't even know how I would managed without having a laptop of my own. In college there are a lot of papers to write and a lot of research to be done, and having a computer of your own in your dorm makes it so much easier to do you schoolwork. Some problems with computer labs on campus are having to wait to use the computers, not being able to save any of your wok on the computer (you will need a Flash drive which can be easily lost), and sometimes the labs have certain hours. There have been many nights where I am working on my computer into the very early horus of the morning and I would not have been able to do that in a lab. Having a laptop also makes scheduling easier because you will be able to be flexible and in control of when you do your homework and how you balance your work with your other college clubs and activities. College can be really busy and it is helpful to have a laptop to work with. I also don't like going outside too much after dark, so not having to walk between labs and my dorm is also very helpful.

I would also advise you to get a printer. There have been several occasions where I have gone to print something in the lab and the printer is out of paper or toner. A little printer in my room makes a world of difference. At some universities you have to pay per page to print, so having your own computer and printer may actually save you money over four years.

It is also a nice tool to be able to relax. I do like being able to browse the web at night before bed or video chat with my mom and dad in the evenings.

A laptop is definitely worth it. You can survive without it, but college is hard enough as it is and you should try to knock out any unnecessary difficulties.

i am trying to record some clips of my gameplay of fallout new vegas. and i can record now, but on lowest resolution and it is still choppy. what should i upgrade on my computer?
RAM? i have 2.0 GB
Processor? i have a dual core 2.53 GHz
graphics card? i have radeon HD 2400 PRO (sucks)
please dont tell me i need to upgrade all ( it wont help)

which do i need to upgrade the most to be able to record my games?

Ok well i shall assume you live in the US.
The best option is to build your own (its fun, you know exactly what you are getting, more options, and its cheaper). The best places to go is http://newegg.com and http://tigerdirect.com (newegg is generally better)

well for your budget and needs is say something like this:

CPU: core i5-2500 (K version is for heavy overclocking, and is a better value if you overclock, but you said you dont really want to so)

Motherboard: any full atx socket B3 revision 1155 motherboard will do. id go for the P67 chipset.

Ram: 8gb of ddr3 (2x4gb), if you want to go above 1333 @ cl9, you will need to manually set it in the bios, like say if you got ddr3 1600 @ cl9, it will run 1333 @ cl9 unless you set it up.

Graphics: ati 6850 (smaller card) or ati 6950 (larger card, will need a full tower case or a mid tower that supports long cards). You can also go for something like the gtx560. the gtx560 is nvidia so you may be able to use CUDA while video editing. the gtx560 is small and will fit in any case.

PSU: 500-600W is enough. look for an 80+ certified antec, corsair, seasonic, silverstone, thermaltake, xfx or enermax brand.

HDD: 1tb 7200rpm 32-64mb cache hdd is good. if you want you can get a 32-64gb SSD and use it to boot windows and any games/software you want to load faster.

optical drive: any sata dvd burner will work fine.

case: antec, coolmaster, thermaltake and nzxt make really good cases. A ztx mid tower will work in most cases. the coolmaster haf 912 is a mid atx and is capable of longer graphics cards and its a cheaper case. but if you want the 6950 you will need that or a full tower.

So in August of last year I bought a top of the line HP Laptop, it has the best Core i7, ATI Mobility Radeon Graphics (1 Gig dedicated) Windows 7, 6 gigs of DDR3 Ram, and it is a 15". But within the last week I have had my computer slow down to a point that I watch the words on my computer getting typed after typing them 3 seconds before. It has also had 2 thermal shutdowns as well and I have ran a virus scan with Malware Antibites and Shaw Secure and they both say I do not have a virus. This has made me think that i may want to upgrade/downgrade to a 13" Macbook pro because i am going to university next year and think I will be using my laptop for University alot more. So my question is, should i sell my PC and get a macbook pro? Here are the two computers i am looking at:

Hey there, you've got to decide what you actually want your new macbook for? I know you mentioned what you like doing on your iMac, but what's the macbook going to be used for if the iMac does everything you need already?

You either need a powerful Macbook Pro to become an iMac replacement, or a conveniently portable Macbook to open up for use with your internet usage. If you believe you will move the 'mobile computer' around a great deal, then you should get the Macbook Air because it's far lighter and more compact.

Up to you really, but you really have to decide what you'll be using it for!

You don't really need to charge a new laptop. It comes precharged from the factory (at around 45% of the battery capacity) which is enough for you to just plug it in and start using it. you can leave it plugged in constantly. I assume that you are going to have your laptop plugged in almost 90% of the time anyways, so it's not necessary to fully charge the battery.

You can always remove the battery from the laptop and just use the external power supply when it's not charging and this will also help the battery life, but again this is not recommended for people that use their laptop in the home mostly and is only if you take it for work every day and use battery power for an extended period of time.

I am taking summer classes and have to commute for 2 hours each way so an ipad would be conveint but I dont kknow if i should hold out and wait to buy the newer version if there is even one...

This happened with my current iPhone, i bought a new iPhone 3G a month before the release of iPhone 4... FML

Home >All Categories > Computers & Internet >Hardware >Desktops >Open Questionso i got tron evolution for PC, i started the game and it made me create a windows live account, i did. then it made me get permission from a parent, and we had to make a parent account. when we tried to make the account it said we found a glitch in the system. then after that i got on the game logged in and it said there was an update for windows live, it started the update, and told me that to continue with the update i had to quit the game, when i quit the game the update didn't continue. i opened windows live and it said there was an update i installed the update then when i tried to open it it said i needed to install sign in assist, i opened the internet page and installed the 32-bit download, when i opened it it installed most of the way but then it told me that it ended prematurely, i tried to install the 62-bit but it said it wasn't a win32 file. i found that i needed to turn on automatic updates but it wouldn't let me. then i tried opening windows live again and i could not find it on the computer, i tried to open the games for windows live market place(which was installed on my computer with the sign in assist thing) and that was gone two. when i opened tron it didn't open windows live. WHAT HAPPENED?Answer Question

Stay away from HP and Mac laptops. HP laptops overheat and have performance problems the older they get. It sounds like you're not going to use it for heavy use so even a "bargain" $500-$750 laptop would work perfectly for you. As for brands/models it's mostly what you can afford and if you need financing and what you can get. Dell Inspirons have been around for awhile and are really good, reliable, and affordable. I've had one for 6 years and I'll I've had to do is get a new battery. Toshiba's are good. Sony Vaio laptops are also pretty good, but on the more expensive side.

I'd say pick one you like that has the features/options you like. For photo editing and digital drawings and movies, I'd suggest a larger screen, but other than that, it sounds like just about any laptop specification would work for you.

Asl about the processor speed, screen size, RAM Memory and Hard Disk space, Battery life, Wifi, Any extras. How many USB's are there? How long does it take to charge? Does it have an effiency rating? Does it have a built in webcam? Does it have a CD burner? How easy is it to type/move mouse with? Are all the button conviently located? Is it over priced?

Surgest some of the programs you might use and the situations and there'll lead you to a good laptop.
