The laptop can run off the charger without a battery, period. This is 100% safe and in fact what you should be doing to keep the battery life lasting longer. If you keep the battery in then you're doing damage to the battery. Keeping the dead battery and the charger in may cause harm to your laptop, so just remove the dead battery.
