I looked into build a Barebones Laptop back in Jan '10 and it just wasn't worth it. The names of the real maker of laptops are Clevo, Quantra, Compal, GVC, and yes Asus.

I couldn't find a good site which sold the Basic laptop hardware. What's in the basic hardware, it's the Case, motherboard, graphics chip that's soldered onto the board, keyboard, and screen. It all comes as one. All you have to do is buy the Processor, Ram, and HDD. I'm not sure about the CD drive, sorry. I'm not exactly sure about the heatsinks either.
