1st of all RAM cannot be replaced by a usb drive !
If u have >2gb RAM then don't go ahead it won't show any improvement.
Windows 7 supports a feature called readyboost while XP doesn't have any such feature but an alternative is available for both win 7 and xp called eboostr (better than readyboost coz it lets u customize which files u want to keep in cache.)
Usb drive , have faster response time and sequential read speed compared to ur hdd so that spare usb stick cud be used as temporary storage of frequently accessed files if u r out of ram for faster accessing.
But ur usb drive must be fast too for readyboost to work.
Just plug it into the usb port and windows 7 will give u some auto play option from where u can choose readyboost or simply open Computer then right click on the usb drive (u inserted) then select properties then from the tab select readyboost and set the space of the drive that u want as readyboost. !

Enjoy !
