Open Question: if have not used a printer for 3 years..& the ink cartridges dont work..will it help to place them in hot H20?

have heard that you can make them unclog by placing them in hot water..and then letting them dry..but just wanted to make sure of this before try it.
also, what are the chances will have to replace the printer head too? and would this mean that it might be cheaper to just by a new printer?
any help appreciated.
